my young eastern,,hes like 18-20 inches long and eats like a horse,,but whenever i go to pick him up he strikes and rattles his tail and when i hold him he stiffins his neck and makes very fast movements,,,when i first got him he was fine is there a reason why he is being aggressive?

check your temperatures, using a good thermometer, and make sure to measure on the floor of your cage. High temps make snakes more aggressive and hyper.

My California Kingsnake did/does the same thing - mellow as a baby when I first got him. Then he reached his "terrible twos" at around 2-3 months after I got him. Never struck me with his mouth open though - all a big bluff. I've read they go through this because they're insecure until they reach a larger size. Have a lot of gentle patience and let him work through it and learn to trust you. I've got an adult Speckled King who doesn't flinch a bit when you reach in to take him out - not head shy at all. Good luck.
