FINALLY finished new cage

el_toro Jun 30, 2005 08:47 PM

Long ago, in a city far, far away, I found a big wooden box cheap at goodwill. I took it home and decided how to create a nice big cage for one of my uros. Well, many, many, many months (and at least two uros later), I finished the thing. It's not much to look at, but I'm mostly constructionally incompetent, so I'm pretty darned happy with it! Spike will move in after I test temperatures and lighting.

The cage on top is Scuttlebutt and Shazzbot's - it's 4' long, to give you an idea of size.

Yeah, this IS a bit heavier than that hide!!

The only reason it worked out is that the box was already made - I just added on to it!

WoW! that's really nice. seems heavy, but looks awesome. great job...i'd say you have skills.
so come on...give us more details. can you snap a shot of what the lighting looks like? is that real tile or linoleum?
looks like you're gonna have one happy lizard camped out in there.

My sister in law snitched my camera for the night, so this is the only shot I got of the lighting. It's a 4-bulb, 4' fluorescent fixture (2 reptisuns, 2 sylvania sunsticks). The two ceramic sockets will be for incandescent heat lights. I may have to change those depending on how the temps work out. I went with fluorescent UVB since I have too small a distance between bulb and basking area to use a MegaRay like on my other cages.

The flooring is scrap linoleum that I got at a local place called Bring. It's like an organized junk yard where you can get all kinds of stuff (windows/glass, furniture, appliances, wood, etc.) for really cheap. I figured I didn't want to take any chances with the waterproofing of the floor, so it's linoleum cemented in place, sealed all around the edges.

I've been inspired, lol. I've been wanting to make my own, but on a college students limited budget i'll have to wait.

I'll be posting pictures of some units I started assembling today later in the weekend. The actual hard materials cost is impressively low for these, but tools are getting the best of my budget right now :-O If you can tough it out with minimal tools you could pound something together quite easily and cheaply dropping a few features and all. Tools pay off when you're doing multiple units. I'm making four 2'x4'x18" containers and will be doing at least two more in a 3' variety to stack with my other Visions.

The tools DEFINITELY make the job! The difference between using a crappy miter box and a radial arm saw is unreal. Thank goodness for sisters-in-law and their well-decked-out basements!!!

Constructionally incompetent???? I don't think so!! The cage is awesome, a great setup for your guy. He is one lucky lizard. Was that some type of showcase? I know my husband has a bunch of showcases in our barn, but I don't think I would have such a talent to create a nice cage like that. Great job. My picture is my somali boy, Amani, and he looks like he's jealous. LOL

I have no idea what it was for - it didn't make a lot of sense. It was just a big, heavy wooden box with one side open. There was a sort of lid that fit into the hole, which I discarded. I set sliding tracks into the hole for the glass doors.

The whole thing is very heavy and solid, which was the reason for putting it on casters (5 of them total). It's nice that it's heavily constructed since I can put the glass cage on top. If the glass one was an actual aquarium, I'd be more hesitant to stack them, but it's a terrarium. The glass is much thinner than for an aquarium, so it's about half the weight - I can carry it by myself.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments! I swear it's really a lot more ragged looking up close than in the pictures. Plus I had a LOT of help from my sister-in-law the fix-it whiz.
