Where do snakes pick up mites?

rocket Jul 14, 2003 10:34 PM

I am a novice and may have a BRB with mites. Where do these guys come from? what is the best treatment? How do I know for sure that that is the problem? Thanks.

Snakes can get mites in several different ways:

If they are caged with another snake that has mites.

If they are placed in a cage that preiously held a snake with mites. They can hide and live hidden in small cracks and crevices for some time.

If the keeper brings in cage furnishings that are harbouring mites. This could be something that was previously used in a mite-infested cage and not completely disinfected and treated for mites, or it could be a limb or rock brought from outside into the cage.

The handler can bring mites on his skin or clothes.

My recommendation for getting rid of them is to go to your vet and have him mix you a .1% Ivomec spray. You then mist the entire cage, furnishings, snake and all once a day for 5 days.

I'm not sure about how to get them out of the tank but DON'T use bleach. For the snake give him a rub down in olive oil and they will fall right off.
