Philothamnus angolensis eating:

Oxyrhopus Jul 01, 2005 09:58 AM

I think this is angolensis? I am not aware if there is really not a forum for this species but its like a green racer so I will also post it on the rear fanged forum although I do not think they have rear fangs, although its likely they have large teeth as frogs are their main diet? It's common name is African Green Bush snake. She laid eggs last year and I have pics of a baby eating a pink. I really like the specks on its body that kinda glitter and the blue on the lips.

Holding on to a leapord frog is not easy for me or the snake.

This little fellow took to scented defrosted pinks fast and now eats them unscented and alive.

Beautiful snake. Did you breed her to a male, or was she a recent import (or both)? You've got one of the most interesting snake collections I've ever seen; I'd love to see more of this unusual stuff bred in captivity (what? the snake world doesn't begin and end with ball python morphs?). Of course, if I HAD some oddball pythons I'd be able to afford a place with a bigger snake room.

She arrived gravid as an import. The baby is a male so I hope to rear him to breed his mom just in case I cannot locate a male by 07. Friends have other babies that are also doing well.

i see you feel the same way i do stachett(:, i never really got the appeal of ball pythons and those crazy morphs. id much rather have an interesting snake than one that looks noce but just sits there. id take a garter snake over any ball python

and of course i have to say that thats an awesome snake.

any special care requirements? how about temprament? and i guess in order to be posted in the racer forum they must be fast(:

The book says its a ground dwelling type of bush snake however it sometimes basks on branches. They are quite jumpy like racers and slim in nature and a bit nippy however do calm after a few minutes of handling. Actually there are many species of snakes that come from other countries that do not have a forum for discussion, so I decided to put it here and the rear-fanged forum although this species is not well known for being rear-fanged or a racer. However it could also be consider a green african garter snake, but Africa has its own species of what they term garter snakes, and those species are indeed very venomous.

yeah african garters are elapids i believe?

either way, while im sure that snake has some kind of venom it certainly doesnt appear to be very powerful by the way its having trouble w/ that frog. are they particularly fast moving on the ground?

any way they certainly are beutiful snakes and if you ever breed them and want to sell any of the offspring i sure wouldnt mind taking one off your hands(:

good luck w/ them, really cool snakes

Seems like they do not even care to wait for the prey item to die before swallowing it, so even if there is a tad of venom compounds in their saliva, they do not seem to use it. And they are quite active and perhaps can take off rather quickly in the grass. Oh, and the other babies were already given to friends however if I am successful to breed this species I will let you know.

haha thats ok i was kidding but one day if you breed these guys i sure wouldnt mind keeping one so just be sure to post any success in breeding on here(: they certainly are awesome snakes. good luck with them
