RES is eating gravel

fatmatt888 Jul 01, 2005 10:17 AM

I did not realize having gravel in my aquarium could be ba dfor my turtle until about a week and a half ago. i immediately took it out. Ever since my turtle has been vrapping little pieces of it. He acts fine and still eats food and is very active, but keeps on crapping out little blue rocks. What is a turtle's digestive system like? will he more than likely just pass the gravel or is this an urgent matter?

It is not good. It could clog the digestive track. If it id a full grown RES then get big very smooth rocks. If it is a baby then you don't have to get big ones, just enough so that they can't eat them. Also get smooth ones all the time so that it does not scratch RES shell.

It's really hard to say especially since you don't know how much was ingested. The safest thing would be a visit to the vet for an x-ray. Ingested gravel can cause an impaction and can be fatal. The fact that he is expelling it is very good. Definately keep a very close eye on him in case he stops passing anything.

It's not necessary to have any gravel at all in the tank but if you want something go with river rocks that would be too large for an adult to swallow.

You may also want to try natural colors instead of colors that may resemble food pieces. avoid the neons and bright colors.
