Night time air temps in cage...???

Noir Jul 01, 2005 11:11 AM

I noticed last night that the temps in my snakes cage got low, or I think they are too low. Over night the hot side fell to 80 degrees, and the cool side fell to 74 degrees. Is this too low? During the day they seem fine. Hot side 88 degrees, and cool side 82 degrees. Are these temps all fine. or should I get a lamp to keep the snake warmer at night? Thanks!!!

Normally it wouldnt be TOO much of a concern as they are appropriate during the day and a small night time drop is considered beneficial by some. However, if I remember correctly from your previous posts you have a suri. I would probably buy a cermic heating element to use at night to keep the temps up a bit higher, place it above the heat pad (I assume your using a heat pad or some form of UTH ??) to help raise the ambient temps and increase the temp of the hot spot somewhat.

By going with a cermic heating element you dont disturb the natural photoperiod as you would by using a light bulb for heat. Plus, if you get a thermostat neither the snake, or you will be bothered by the bulb flashing on and off as the therm. does its thing ...... which leads me to my next point.

You really need to look into a thermostat you can get a decent one at bigapple.com for 29.95 (check the link below). This way you dont have to monitor your temps constantly because they can and will change depending on the daily temp outside, the seasons, nightime highs and lows, ect, ect. It wil be the BEST 29.95 you ever spent in your life. Its a guarentee that your boa has the appropriate temps and with young suris especially ... it is a very important requirement to keeping them feeding and healthy.
