Any substitution...

LizardLuva Jul 01, 2005 07:49 PM

to rodent feeding?

I mean, i love snakes, alot, but im only a teenager and my little brother keeps rats, and my mom isnt found of the fact that i want to feed a snake mice and/or rats.

It would be fine to feed insects, such as Hissing Roaches, if i could start a colony, and scent them with a few mice... could i do this if i perhaps have a substitution with proper nutrional value??

Thanks
Nic

no a snake would not survive on insects....
i have a snake, and pet rats, and a few mice.....
my snake only eats frozen thawed mice, for several reasons, i can buy a bunch and keep them in the freezer(my animals have their own fridge) and also with frozen/thawed(f/t) the snake wont get injured trying to eat as he might from a live mouse.
also i go to reptile shows when they are near my area and pick up mice as they are less expensive due to no shipping charge.
also zoo-med makes a "snake steak" you can buy if you can find them.

my first fridge i had i bought at a yard sale one saturday morning, for 20 bucks.
the current fridge i have i bought at a pawn shop for 35, the good thing about them also is if you turn them on high the entire fridge becomes a freezer on the smaller ones of course, but i also have a chest type freezer that has most of my mice in it, and my gliders food aswell, and fish food.

the one that came from the yard sale was the smallest you can buy.
the pawn shop was a 3 ft high.

If you cant get your parents permission and there rodent lovers you might end up owning a snake when you move out.lol..Never fall in love with the food....Paul

I also keep cornsnakes and have pet rats. I LOVE my rats too. My corns eat frozen/thawed mice. I could NEVER feed live but thawing is not a problem for me. Most petshops carry frozen mice. Maybe you could arrange to buy a single frozen mouse on feeding day. Or arrange to have someone else keep the mice in their freezer. Or you just might have to wait until you are older. You are young and you have time on your side.

Have you ever considered a rough green snake or a midland brown snake?
