Just found a nice Gray Ratsnake!

ErikH Jul 01, 2005 08:04 PM

It actually found me,it set my new mouse colony back a little bit though.I just found it when I checked in on my mice,it was in the cage with them!It had eaten 3 females,2 of them pregnant, and a whole litter of fuzzies, and killed another female that it didn't eat.It could've at least had the common courtesy to eat some of my extra males! It is about 3 feet long, and nice looking for a gray rat,has a nice yellow color.I need to figure out how it got in there, this has happened before,in fact I think this is the same snake that did this last year,it looks the same but was alot smaller then.I let it go last year, but I might have to try to give it to someone this time, since it has learned where the free mice are.If anyone around central Alabama wants it,let me know.Sorry, don't have any pics,no camera right now.

Hi

Why don't you just take it to a new area and release it.

I thought about that, but I have read alot of stuff about how relocated snakes usually don't make it in the wild, due to not knowing where to hibernate or find food.Or something about how the area the snake is released into usually already has enough snakes for it to support, any more would throw off it's food chain.Anyway, this snake won't be getting anymore free mice from me.

Im from alabama man! dekalb county and i just received a nice gray rat that is yellowish also, that is awesome, are u selling it?

ErikH Jul 01, 2005 11:22 PM

I'm not selling it,but I might give it away.I'm gonna keep it at least until it poops out all my mice!LOL.I thought about relocating it,but there are a lot of reasons not to do that,I've read that they don't do well, and usually don't make it.And if it did make it,it could mess up the locality genetics by breeding with snakes it wasn't supposed to meet.
