My new mouse colony got exterminated today.....

ErikH Jul 01, 2005 08:46 PM

I came home from work and checked on my mice and there was a FAT 3 ft gray ratsnake in the cage with them!It had eaten 3 females,2 of them pregnant,a whole litter of fuzzies, and had killed another female that it didn't eat.And it didn't even have the courtesy to eat a few of my extra males!I can't figure out how it got in the room, much less how it lifted the top to get in the cage with them,my lids fit tight. This same snake(pretty sure)did this last year,I let him go then, but I think he is gonna be someone's pet this time. It's a pretty nice snake for a gray rat, never tried to bite this time or last year.He had to have came in somewhere in the house, because the mouse room doesn't have anything a snake could get through except under the door.I'll have to move all the furniture and check the whole house for cracks or holes that a snake could come in through. The first time it was neat to find a snake in the house, but the same one has done it twice and I'm getting a little tired of it now.

That's very weird. Most snakes are too shy to come into someones house. AND a rat snake that didn't try to bite you! Perhaps you have someones lost pet?

Sorry to here about your bad luck...

Two Gophers (one adult and one baby) and a Desert King. Nothin shy about them either... especially the big Gopher. He was soooo frustrated banging away on the top of the mouse cages trying to steal a meal. Grrrrrr.

Sorry about your loss.

I had a ratsnake come into the house one time when it was nearing winter. My mom and I were chilling out watching t.v. when we noticed the snake curled on a pile of boxes chilling out with us.

You know I never had a snake come in get my rats, but,

About this time last year I had a need to breed mice. I had a nice outdoor pen set up for breeding my mice( It was only up for a few weeks as you will see). When I had my first few litters of pinkys every thing was good, but when I had a nother litter a few days later some came up missing. I thought OK mice some times eat thier young.

I have a game room out back, nothen more then a large shed, with a/c and stuff.Anyway I was out there one night with some friends playing pool and out of nowhere we heard a big loud bang. Of course we were drinking a little, and it made us jump. I looked outside and saw nothen.

Then about 10-15 minutes later bam, another big bang, but this time we heard where it came from. I went over to the mice pen, looked in the boxs where the pinkys were. Two more were missing.

We sat outside for a few, nothen, then out of nowhere this owl came down and took a pinky. The banging was the owl hitting the top of the pen as he was coming in for the kill.

I have to say it was very cool to see him/her fly down and grab a pinky. after the owl had taken 4-5 pinkys, it just sat there on top of the shower head( we have an outdoor shower don't ask) looking at us.

I ofcourse moved the mice inside the next day, as nice as it was to watch, I had something that needed to eat.

We still see that owl every now and then, and if I didn't know better I would say he/she is a little mad at me.

Don't know why I just said that, I mean having a snake come in and eat all your breeders is bad. but for some reason it made me think of that night.

Have a happy and safe 4th!
