Big Bertha Momma Waiego Update:

Oxyrhopus Jul 01, 2005 09:35 PM

Here she is today. She seemed to have shifted the babies in the last two days to her lower end so I am nervous like an expecting father praying all goes well with the birth. The day she drops I will post a pic of the babies, live or dead. In any case, the father was white, so the litter ought to be interesting.

She sure looks bloated. I hope she drops you a big healthy litter. I've noticed my new girl goes to the water bowl first thing almost every night, you might want to make sure there's no chance any babies could drown in a water dish just to be safe. I bet they'll all be in good shape though-keep us posted.

Well she has a water bowl but it is very shallow at this point and she is consistently keeping her upper body elevated and stretched out and does not coil tightly as these babies are keeping her stretched. Two nights ago I watched her wiggle or contract her sides. I guess she was moving the babies lower? I don't know but if she drops a load of dead babies, I am gonna crap my pants. The male was also humping her a lot when she was gravid so perhaps she stored his sperm? I am wondering if he was able to hump her because she was so fat and could not get away. Perhaps getting the females a bit fat on rodents will ensure the male can hold them still. By the way, the male did go off feed the first time a many months ago when he bred her. But recently when he bred, he did not go off feed? So if you ever pair yours up, be sure to watch the males feeding schedule as it might indicate he is being stimulated by the female?

I'm glad you've been noticing all of these little signs. Other would-be carinata breeders can definately use info like that. I wish they'd be born today, then we could share a birthday. As long as they're healthy I'll be happy though.

Well happy birthday for you, but not for the my waiegos. I have kept other candoia and it seems to take forever for them to drop. And just when you get worn out of rushing to the cage every morning to see if the mom dropped, you find the babies in there when you least expected it. Friends have even brought me candoia species and said they were off feed and they were gravid snakes and they did not even notice it as they often can get stocky in captivity from weekly feedings. After a shed they drop, however my waiego has not shed yet, so perhaps it will soon?
