iggy bathtime and workouts

yavannaus Jul 01, 2005 10:12 PM

so, when ever i give oscar a bath, and she isnt up for it and throws her little "i'm a motor boat" fit, i take advantage of the fit and hold her in place. she just keeps swimming, so it's like an iggy tredmill. this is about a once a week thing, b/c normally she poos as soon as she hits the water.
anyway, it this iggy workout a good thing for her? she has the entire guest bathroom to herself, but it just still doesnt seem like enough roaming space for her. today, she seemed very out of breath and was breathing pretty hard when i let her finally have her way and go to the shallow end of the tub.
and this probably sounds like a stupid question, and i'm pretty sure i know the answer, but how much would a chlorinated pool affect and iggy? yep, now that i see it in writing, it sounds like a bad idea. i wish there was small small pond nearby that i could take her swimming in or something. does anyone here take their iggy swimming?

Chlorinated water is bad.
Drinking it is bad.
For the eyes, it's bad.

For you, it's badm cuz it may release waste... so... not so nice uh? Yes, it's chlorinated and filtered, still, why swim in iggy doo?

The swimming fit sounds more like stress... am I right?
Just let her swim on her own (iguanas can hold their breath for a good amount of time) and figure out the shallow part. The panting may be more stress related than fatigue.

Plastic kiddie pools or ponds u buy at HomeDepot or Walmart or wherever are good. They are big enough for a good soak, and if soiled, just empty, sterilize, and reuse. Iguanas are tree-climbers, not swimmers, and swimming is usually an escape venue.

How big is she anyways?
Feel free for ask more Q's.

oscar is about 1 to 1 1/2 ft SVL. I have no idea how old she is. I never got to meet her previous owners, and the zoo that took her in didnt ask them any questions about her. when whe went to the vet a few months ago, they guessed she could be anywhere from 5 to 7 years old, and that she will not grow much more. She was given impropper care for the first few years of her life, and is now somewhat stunted.
