Chuckies in Vegas?

ksterry Jul 01, 2005 10:20 PM

Get to go to Las Vegas next week. Are there any good chuck-watching spots there?

Went to Dallas last week; visited the Dallas Zoo. There was a real fine chuck enclosure there with 5 adults hanging around the flat rocks in the cage. It's well worth seeing for anyone who lives in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area or those who are visiting and like to watch chucks in a natural-type cage. Go quickly however; they're soon to replace the outdoor chuck cage with an outdoor rhino ig cage. Maybe they'll put the chucks inside the reptile house rather than simply deleting their presence in the zoo.

There are chucks in Vegas but it has grown up so much lately that there probably aren't many chuckwallas in town anymore. You don't have to go very far in any direction to find them. To the east is Lake Mead, Red Rock to the west, Stateline (Primm) to the south. All good areas. You probably don't have to go that far even. Those areas are just where commercial collectors find them. Just look in the cracks of any rock piles and you can probably find them closer to town.

Here's one I found in Boulder City (a little north of Las Vegas) last weekend. To see other pictures from this trip, visit my website and click on the Las Vagas button at the bottom of the page.
