Hypo carpets...New Morph in the US!

Jay Jul 01, 2005 10:46 PM

Well Will...here they are. The latest pics of the mystery carpets! Originally brought in from overseas these carpets appeared to be hypomelanistic possessing no black at all. As they have matured they have slowly developed spotty black borders around the broken bands. The colors have really started to come out and showing a range of aquas, yellows and oranges! Beautiful animals and very different to say the least.
I am curious to see what everyone thinks about these carpets?! They are starting to feed ravenously on frozen rats and should really take off in their growth!
Looking forwardto their future breedings!!!!!!
Thanks for looking,

Slightly different than the female but just as nice!

Brought in from which overseas country? Just curious.

They were neonates and completely devoid of any black pigment.

First let me say that those carpets are gorgeous. Is it possible they could be a cross of some kind? Most Irian Jaya Carpets and some Coastals are born with no black in their pattern and some have less black than both the juvenile carpets you have posted.

Here are some examples of both...

Hatchling IJCP...

Adult male IJCP with very little black...

and here is a Coastal that is owned by Yasser at Spitfire Reptiles...

I think calling them a morph is a little premature. I am sure you would get amazing offspring if they were bred back to each other but what happens if they are bred to a "normal" carpet? Do you get your new "morph"? I am guessing you would get a mixed clutch that is typical with most carpet pythons. Rather than calling them a new "morph" I would just call them very nice carpets.

Jeremy, I have to say that Jay's Hypo Carpets are different from anything you posted or suggested. I have seen them in person and I know of others just like them, both in Europe and in Australia. I believe they are all from the same line, and I believe they are all pure Coastals. True, Jay will have to prove them out to be sure, but they are likely simple recessive.

They look great, Jay!!!! ...& good luck with them.

Well...let's see what happens this coming breeding season. Most likely I will attempt to breed the male to a regular coastal and go from there. To the best of my knowledge this "trait" has not been proven as of yet so we don't know what to expect. To me that is the fun of it all..... exploring the unknown!! I just love this hobby!!! Here is a slightly older pic under different lighting.
Thanks for your comments!

Whatever they are, they look really nice. I have to admit, I was skeptical about them when they were advertised on here a few months back. They look like they're turning out great.

Jay,

Those look like some Coastals that I've seen in European collections. I do believe they're coastals, due to the linear patterns. Considering the source they came from, it's no wonder why they were advertised as Irian Jayas.

Whatever they are, I want some.

Please keep us posted as they progress.

Thanks,
Anthony
