Geryi in groups?

Cas Jul 14, 2003 11:23 PM

How do Saharan (geryi) do in groups? I'm wondering because I would like to get a mate for mine eventually, but don't know for sure what sex it is yet (btw, if you try to sex by pore count, what are the #s for males and females?). If at some point I found a female, and it turned out mine was a female, would they do okay as a group of 0.2? And if I then found a male, would they co-habitate alright as 1.2? (all in a large enough enclosure, of course)

Thanks,
Dawn

The Saharans seem to be one of the most tolerant of cohabitating with others. I even have a mali and saharan that live together with no problem. Two females, a male and female or male with two females would be the best choice. In some species, two females are a real problem. IF you decide to go this route, you should have a complete setup available in case it does not work out. You have to watch for signs of agression, bite marks on the sides of one, one not eating, staying in the hide, not basking... I have all of my different species paired except one rainbow benti. He was a little bully, so he is housed alone. Since lizards are terretorial, you might want to do it sooner than later. Again, these are just my opinions and experience, not gospel. I'm sure you will have many more, both pros and cons. Good luck.

I have 2.2--all saharans. I got the two males at the same time and I think this makes a difference. The females were introduced separately; one about four months later and the other female another four or five months after that. They all get along just fine. One of my males is yellow-phase and he's dominant and larger than my red male and always has been (even though they're close in size, the yellow is more muscular--both females are red phase.) BUT, I got a juvenile yellow male back in May and housed in separately for the most part. I tried to put them all together a few times and my original yellow male showed signs of agression--maybe he was just too close for comfort. (Thank goodness I was out there at the time, so no harm--other than my shock--done.
