growth rates???

liz_emt Jul 15, 2003 12:59 AM

I was wondering about size and growth rates... I read in a post from urozone that someone has a 10 week old that is 5.5 inches.... My 10 week old is 7.5 inches... is that abnormal? I have read that they grow very fast... but is that too fast? He has a voracious appetite... he goes thru about 30 crickets a day... still wont touch greens tho.. When I got him at six week he was a little over 4 inches... BTW.... he isn't fat... just built very well... and the base of his tail is nice and plump (signifies a healthy dragon right?)

no, your dragon is not abnormal.. the size will vary greatly on the genetics of the dragon, the temperatures, the feeding schedule, cage size, stress, cagemates, and so on. 7.5" at 10 weeks is def not to large.

To give you an idea, one of our holdback dragons Pyro is 12 1/4" at 10 weeks... he's a large, fat, healthy dragon. Others in our clutch that are not the biggest average around 10" to 11.5"... tho we did have one runt that took six weeks to shed and was just at 6" at 6 weeks which was very small. Cute lil guy tho.

5.5 inches at 10 weeks is considerably small. A standard number used is 6 inches at 6 weeks, though there can be much variation. A dragon I have was 6 1/4 inches at 4 weeks. Not sure what he was at 6 weeks. Growth usually is somewhere between 1/4 to 1 inch per week in young dragons, and slowing as they get older. They can grow after 1 year, just extremely slowly. So, anyway, getting back to your dragon, it is not growing too quickly. I'd even say it's small for 10 weeks. The bloodline can make a big difference in growth rate and adult size as well, so it is possible that your dragon comes from a smaller line. If a dragon was 5.5 inches at 10 weeks, I might suspect it was not truly 10 weeks old, or that there was some underlying issue.

Hey go to www.dachiu.com This is the website for bearded dragons and other creatures. They have a comprehensive growth chart that cover many diferent bloodlines. 1 More?s is 1 of the dragons a male and the oher a female because females are usaully smaller than the males but who knows you might just have a fast grower.
