heat/light in a uro tank (general lighting question)

polosue25 Jul 03, 2005 08:50 AM

First off, are the reptile UVA/UVB fluor lights a lot better than a regular fluor bulb from a store? I see different UV ratings on the rep ones, I currently have a repti glo 8.0 from exo terra, but would a regular store bought fluor light work? I'm also think of adding an incandescent light fixture to boost temps, but are there advantages/disadvantages over something like a ceramic heating fixture? My thinking is I can have all the bulbs on during the day and then turn off the fluor and incandescent at night, leaving the red heat lamp on for nighttime temps. any thoughts?

The incan;s are pretty much the same but the flour's are not. They have different wavelenths as far as UV.. Just be careful with all that lighting....

Uromastyx need a strong source of UVB, and a wide temperature range, up to 120 degree surface temperature directly under the basking spot.

I have a 2x3 foot enclosure. two 18" reptisun 5.0s and a 160 Watt Powersun as the basking spot about 12 inches above the basking site. (UVB output of mercury vapor bulbs are significantly higher than "high UVB" florescents.)

Have you posted on the Uromastyx forum?
