Dumpy frog portrait

bradtort Jul 03, 2005 12:11 PM

My little guy Chop-Chop.

Shot with Nikon d70 and Sigma 105 macro lens. Converted from RAW to JPG, then altered the levels, re-sized and sharpened in Photoshop LE.

The ISO was 400, and the SB27 flash was in autoflash mode. I think it was around f8 and 1/60th. I used a black backdrop.

I had to clone out a lot of moss. I should demand better presentation from my models :->

Very nice. I like the lighting on this one. What did you use? These dumpy frogs really have expressive faces.

Cheers,

I used an SB27 flash on an sc-17 extension cord, with the flash off to the left.

I think I had the flash in autoflash (flash determines exposure, not TTL), since this flash is not TTL compatible with the digital cameras.

I think I should have used a second light (or a reflector) on the right to provide some fill. The shadows are too hard.

And a little more depth of field to bring the nose into focus.

I like the color, mood and expression as well, but I also thought that a bit more fill light on the dark side would help.... (I hope you dont mind) so I touched it up in photoshop to see the impact..... In reality..... I am not sure I dont like the darker image better..... Good shot !
