Changing enclosures....is this too stressful?

tank003 Jul 03, 2005 12:21 PM

Hello,i have three young alligator snappers(3-4"that i house in a 55gallon aquarium. In my front yard i have a small pond(5x5)and now that it is warm all day long i have been putting them outside in the pond until it starts to get dark then i bring them back inside to there 55 gallon. They seem to enjoy being outside as they are very active and alert. My question is,will this stress them too bad moving them in and out all the time? The reason i dont keep them outside all the time is i am afraid it might get a little too cold for them at night.Any advice would be apreciated.Thank you
CJ

Where do you live, and how cool does it get at night? I would think that they would be ok going into there tank at night, they should get use to the pattern in a week or so. The only problem I see is a 55gal being to small for 3 4in ally snappers. Also I dont know if its a good idea to be keeping them together. You may run into some aggression problems. If you do decide to keep them out all night make sure theres a fence or some kind of screen cover over the pond to keep them in and predators (raccoons, herons, neighborhood dogs and cats) out.

I am upgrading them to a 125 in about a month or so and i have had them in the same enclosure since they were just over 1".No aggression problems whatsoever.Nighttime temperatures are between 60-68 degrees lately.

I would probably bring them in, that is pretty cool. Just because there hasnt been any aggression dosnt mean there wont be. I would seriously think about dividing them up. Instead of buying an aquarium, buy 3 stock tanks. 3 stock tanks would probably be close to the same price as a 125gal tank. Also what will you do when they get even larger? 3 allys will quickly out grow a 125gal tank. Then you will start running into problems with them breeding when they become mature. Just my opinion...

My snapper followed this routine for a couple of years. It didn't seem to bother her.
