You produce some awesome looking animals, Thanks for sharing.

Nature absolutely forbids mating separate, unique species. Examples:

Mate a horse & a donkey and you get a mule. But it is sterile, and very stubborn. To create more, you must mate more horses & donkeys.

Mate a lion with a tier and you get a liger. But they tend to die within 10 years, they have strong endocrine problems.

In every instance I know of, mating unlike species creates mutant hybrids with severe health problems which almost never die from old age. (Think of the deception you must use when you mate the unlike species - which normally would not have mated on their own.)

I must question the wisdom of creating mutants, no matter how colroful. Probably best that we play by the rules and obdey the laws of nature.

(Any desire to mate a family member with a baboon or gorilla?)

I would think you would be aware that as genetic testing has become more commonplace, some of the animals we called pure species are products of crosses, or hybrids. This will only become more and more common. Also, just this year, I have seen two different types of hybrids in nature. I would agree with you if your talking about crossing a kingsnake with a turtle, I don't believe that has been done, how weird would that be?

Also you should be aware by now, that crossing a horse and a donkey makes a mule, but so does lack of education and strong inaccurate paradigns, those ways of thinking creates mental mules.

As hybrids do occur in nature and it also successfully occur in captivity. In fact, the term hybrid vigor, was coined because sometimes the results seem stronger then the parents.

You may want to attend the hybrid discussion group, as you will become aware(educated) that hybrids have been produced thru many generations without any more problems then you see here, and some have been doing so for a few decades.

You may be aware that many petshop pets are also results of hybridization. Is a dog a dog? or a canary a canary? As is much of the food on your table.

Surely you are not required to like it, keep it, or do it, or eat it, or condon it. But you should get over the old horse and mule thing. I believe that old story and produced more asses(as in jackass) then mules. But I guess this whole hybrid thing is for that forum and has been done to death. But you must not be AWARE of that. FR

I was wondering if you could look at the post I just made in the tegu forum. I'm hoping that your extensive experience with monitors may be able to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I've read some of your recent posts regarding suitable nesting sites with great interest and I believe that my tegu is trying to tell me that I'm missing the mark big time in that area.
Thanks in advance!
Chris

I am not going to a tegu forum and get a whole other group mad at me, hahahahahahahahahahaha. You can also go to varanus.net and ask there. I would be glad to help.

Tegus are at least some are very good at building their own nests, they do so by mounding plant material, then nesting inside that. Thanks FR

gila7150 Jul 04, 2005 10:22 PM

LOL...I can understand that. I posted in the monitor forum.

I think you may have hit on the solution to some of my problems already. I witnessed some of that nest building you mentioned and it was quite interesting. I actually watched her push nesting materials with her two front arms into her burrow. She's a much better nest builder than I'll ever be. Maybe next year I should just sit back and watch her do what she was born to do instead of making her lay in a nesting site that I make.
That will make both of our lives easier
Chris

Good one Frank! I loved that, I laughed out loud.

Certain people in the herpetocultural hobby/busines will keep their precious pure gene pools intact, and to keep them strong they will introduce wc blood into those gene pools.
You might as well face the fact that hybrids are here to stay and that's the way it is.
If you were a true snake lover you'd like all snakes.

>>(Any desire to mate a family member with a baboon or gorilla?)

Not really... Afraid that already happened in my family a few times before. (couldn't help it!)

In defense of mules, while few people can manage them well and they're often difficult to train due to being so smart and stubborn, those things become assets once the mule is on your side. Combine that with being hardy, sure footed, fearless compared to horses and incredibly strong, and you have a damn impressive animal regardless of whether it's sterile or not.
I agree that health problems in hybrids need to be watched for and furthermore, so must the safety and welfare of the parent animals. But with hybrid snakes, so long as the above two concerns are addressed and the exact mix is kept track of, I see no more harm in keeping or breeding a hybrid than in keeping or breeding an albino.

Odd thing was, I wasn't even trying to be that funny when I wrote it! Eh, but it accurately describes my household.

This year every male I tried my speckled king with either wasn't interested or seemed downright afraid of her. Tricking the males didn't work. Their ardor cooled right down when I took out the decoy females. Except for the female I wasn't quick enough to prevent the male from mating. Now I have an unmated speckled king and a clutch of eggs I really didn't want.
