New baby beardie just not doing much..

drunkmike Jul 03, 2005 10:47 PM

I got my first very very very young beardie yesterday. Brought her home and put her in the tank and everything seemed fine, but she just doesnt seem very active like she was when I picked her up. Is this normal for babies to be like this until they get used to stuff? At first all she did was "hide" (I wasnt aware that you arent supposed to have hiding stuff in a tank with beardies this small) so I took everything out except for her rock to bask under the lamp, a small stick, and her food / water bowl. So now she kinda does the "glass run" every once in a while but other then that she kinda just hangs out in the hot corner of the tank looking half awake. She perks up when I pick her up and will grasp onto my finger for dear life when I try to put her back in the tank. All the temps are perfect (hot / cold sides / basking) I have the outdoor grass for the substrate right now.. Basicly everything is prefect I just want to make sure she is going to be ok. IDeas?

Basically....leave her alone. She's already stressed enough being in a new environment, and handling her will make it worse. Some dragons get used to their surroundings fast...some take a little bit longer. I'm sure she'll perk up soon if all her conditions are ideal. I would get rid of the grass immediately. In fact...I've never even heard of this before??? Use non-stick shelf liner from Wal-Mart or papertowels, newspaper, carpet...etc. Any non-particle substrate that's easy to keep clean. What have you offered her for food and what do you use to mesaure the temps?? More info is needed

yes the indoor/outdoor grass stuff.. not the kind that falls apart neither (I picked up a few different types of it) and some of them fell apart really easy.

I am using a digital temp sensor with a probe to read the surface temps and I am getting a temp of 114 - basking / 83 - cool with right around ~ 86 in the center of the tank as far as the temperatures go.

btw she is eating (I didnt see her do it, but I took notice of how much I put in the bowl before I left) her greens. Doesnt seem to like the crix too much which makes me wonder a bit since the lady I got her from said she was a absolute PIG when it came to eating them. I guess I will just have to keep an eye on her for a few days to make sure all is well.

When they are this young they can be tricky to work with. A switch to a new environment is a stressfull time for any animal...leave her alone with minimal contact (only go in the cage to change food and water dishes..etc) give her plenty of basking and hiding sites and let her relax for several days. Temps sound good. She should turn around on her own. The only thing i would do is take a fecal sample into a vet to be looked at, just because the stress of moving to a new home can sometimes cause a parasite overload, especially in young babies

The only thing other than the previous stated I can think of is I remeber a lady having problems with a green substrate and her dragons started dropping like flys. Something to do with the dye but I can't remeber if it was the carpet or a hand towel she was useing. If the other things don't work you might just keep that in mind.
