yellow anaconda breeding question

hhmoore Jul 03, 2005 11:39 PM

I bred yellows a number of years ago. at the time, I had 2 males - both of which were in with my female. Any & every copulation was observed, both males were right there (I admit- it wasn't much of a breeding ball, but it was effective). I've read some conflicting stuff about the need for multiple males to stimulate the female and each other, so my question is this: Has anyone here successfully bred yellows using a single male?

Multiple males are definitely not required to successfully reproduce anacondas in captivity, green or yellow. I am certain that single males find it very convenient in captivity to not have to deal with other males wanting in on the action.

Thanks, Kelly. I had suspected that to be the case, but I wanted to get some feedback. This all stems from the fact that I never witnessed copulation with my current pair, or even any interest...and that at times I have thought the female was gravid, and at other times I was convinced that she wasn't. Over the past few weeks, I have noticed that she has been spending more time on the warm side of her enclosure, and has been exhibiting a very "pythonish" body tilt. She just shed on the 7/1, so I guess I will know soon enough.

I agree with Kelly as far as E. notaeus are concerned. I have bred them for several years, and have only used single males.

it is not unusual for anacondas to shed 2 or 3 times between ovulation and the birth of the young. It can sometimes make the POS difficult to determine. I would be interested in seeing your data after the birth of the young. Thanks,

Kelly

Yeah, she has shed a few times. A couple days after this last one, I gave her a light meal (two "colossal" rats left in her cage so she didn't hit them hard). I am hesitant to feed her again til I see what she does (re: birth); but since I'm still not totally sure, I guess I'll give her 2 more weeks and take it from there. That will be 3 weeks post shed...if she's got anything they should be obvious, if not out, by then

well, it's been 10 days since that shed - and she REFUSED FOOD. Since the only time she has refused a meal for me was if she was in shed, I'm back to thinking that there will babies soon.
