Hi Lele. I just read your all your posts, been away from the computer for a while. I'm really sorry to hear what you had to go through. I could not imagine the frustration and hurt you felt and are feeling. Again i'm very sorry for your loss.

Well, actually I have lots to be grateful for and not the least of which is this forum. Eve, I appreciate the invite to the Pet Loss forum, but I think I get what I need here because I "know" most everyone and they knew Luna (her Luna-tic groupies )

But what I am thankful for is that she died on my lap. How often do we read a post where someone checked on their cham in the morning and found it dead on the cage floor. It is always so sad to read this regardless of reasons. She was on my lap, with my hand around her, in the car for the ride down to Portsmouth and not in her travel box - I wanted her right there with me. I think this has made it easier for me to deal with.

Her cage is still dark and full of all her stuff but I think I will use it for some of my wild silk moths this season - probably my lunas as I had a new brood hatch just today. She was named after these glorious creatures so it might make it a little easier to let go if her space is used for another creature that I love.

Again, thanks to all of you for your support and friendship.

those moths are very pretty .....very cool to find them while you are hiking how are you able to raise them?...did you just find a male and female and know raise their eggs or somthing?

Hi,
I began with eggs from a breeder in CN in 2000. I continued with eggs and/or mating male/female with the stock that I wintered over (spin in late summer and overwonter as cocoons, eclose in June)and wild males. The last few years I have put my females in a mating cage and they will "call" in a wild male. I'll tell you, moth pheromones are amazing! The record is a 21 mile fly for a male promethea moth to reach a female! Their antennae can detect a single molecule! OK, sorry, got a bit off topic here

So, I collect some of the eggs (luna lay about 250, I collect a couple dozen) then release her to lay the rest in the wild. The survival rate of wild caterpillars is only about 1%! Tough odds, so those of us who breed help to increase and/or maintain our local populations. These are related to the Bombyx mori (silkworms) that many of us feed to our chams and other herps. I have to tell you, it was a hard line for me to cross! Like the Bombyx, the luna, ceropia, polyphemus and other wild silk moths do not feed as adults and have a very short adult life - it is all about reproduction.

Lele,

I am SO sorry to hear about Luna...I don't get here much, but I happened to stop in to check things out and I can't believe what I read. What a freak thing...I'm so sorry that she is gone, and we will all miss her and her cute personality.

Take care
Kristen
