Breeding info needed for E. notaeus

Physignathus Jul 04, 2005 01:36 AM

Anyone know any website(s) that has well detailed information on breeding? Including: cool downs, cycling, foods offered to potential females for upcoming breeding, copulation, gestation, birth and neonates. Plus any other important info that may be helpful. I've done a google search(over 4,000 results) but most are in a foreign language. I know these sites can be translated but it is very confusing of what they are saying when translated to english. I still have a few yrs before I want to breed my female but I want to get a well headstart by learning & understanding as much information as I can before attempting this. Hhmoore brings up a good ? about breeding with just one male. That's what I intend to have also I just one male. Hhmoore if you have any info you would be willing to share it would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at the following email addys: amphiumatriactylum@yahoo.com kainmojain@hotmail.com jpkoenig@backroads.net

` First, be damn sure that the females are very healthy, and FULLY mature, this is very important! Don't keep them too warm. Don't worry about cool down. Offer them food, they'll take it if they want it, even while mating. It is a good idea to have the females plump before they go through gestation. Some females will eat during gestation, I feed lightly, if they are interested.
` I've bred Yellows with one male, two males, and multiple males. Some males will "fight" with each other over a female, but with mine, it was a several days long pushing match, and fun to watch and photograph. They raise about 1/4 of their body length, stand up, puff up their throats like rat snakes, and 'push' each other until one gets tired. Then, they go to sleep, often leaving the female saying, "WTF? I'm horny, here." The last time mine bred, the process took almost 2 months. They began to be affectionate with each other and began mating weeks before the female ovulated.
` Once you have an obviously pregnant female, you've got 5 to 8 months to get ready to deal with babies. Once they're born, you've got plenty of time to deal with them. Their bellies must close, then they must shed. That's the time to pick out the healthy keepers, by temperament and behavior.

` Currently, I have to keep my males and females separate, to keep them from breeding. Last time they mated, it was in a community habitat with 6 other Anacondas, 3 Boa c. constrictors, and a Ball Python. I had to turn the hose on them to stop them, lol.

` Mating with one male present.

`
` Big fight! Winner gets female, loser gets rat. Loser is better off. lol

`
` With other males present, the winner wraps the female's cloaca to block others.

` Not me, you horny idiot!

`
` Stop that! The Klan will burn a cross in my front yard, they see this! lol

There is not a lot of detailed information available on captive reproduction in yellow anacondas. DFR gave you some good information in his response. Additionally, some of the best information is in a paper by Bill Holmstrom in International Zoo Yearbook, volume 21, that is definitely worth reading. It covers data collected at the New York Zoological Park. Most larger public libraries or a university library should have a copy. However, most of what is known has come from private individuals. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the input. I'm still well away from breeding Nefertiti. She just turned 1 yr on June 11th so I still got 3-4 more yrs. As for getting females "fattened" up do you increase the food amount? or do you increase the times fed per week? For example: I feed once per 7-10 days. would I shorten that to once every 3-4 days? Dfr, you crack me up with your captions for your pics(which are some great pics). Plus I'm still looking for that special male to be the stud, lol. I'm supposed to be on a list for a male from CrazyCody but for some reason he has fallen off the face of the Earth. So my search continues. Thanks again.

I have all sorts of information I would be willing to share, lol.
As far as breeding E. notaeus, on the other hand, its mostly anecdotal. My previous experiences, though effective, were hardly based on scientific evidence/practice. I read what I could find, talked to people, mixed in what I learned through experience with other species and hoped they knew what they were doing. I didn't document anything; temperature changes were planned, but never as accurate or consistent as I intended. Hopefully, by the time you are ready to start seriously planning things, I will be in better position to dispense advice.
So, just what are you looking for in this future stud that makes him difficult to track down?

Well, I'm probably going to be scorned for this(LOL), but here goes. First thing I'm looking for is color. A bright yellow coloration. Second, but yes VERY important, disposition. One that is not aggressive(whether it be offensive or defensive), not "flighty", works well when handled and is cb. I guess I should have my list as: #1-Healthy, #2-Disposition and #3-Color. But I'm an artist and I like color, LOL.
