I love the 1st male. Are pines afforded any protection in KY? I know they are very hard to come by down there.

I actually knew someone at the U of Arkansas who was working with KY northerns. If you need his e-mail, let me know.

i have one Brooks Kingsnake, hopefully breeding in the next couple of years! yaaahhhh, only if i can find a male though lol, but im still looking for a male lol

Phil Peak Jul 04, 2005 06:43 PM

Thanks Anthony. The person you are referring to is probably the same person we obtained our stock from. I'll shoot you an e-mail just to be sure. If not it would be good to get some more genetic material. We also have a female that we collected in Calloway county as an adult in Sept 03. At this time northerns are afforded no specific protection in KY other than the general regulation regarding herps which is no more than five can be collected from the field. I do think that in time that will change though like most other states. They are hard to come by here. Whether it is their secretive nature or general scarcity we are not for sure. At this point we have hunted for three years every weekend during the active season within known quarter quads of their range and we have found only the one specimen. We have hundreds of sheets of tin and a fair amount of 8'x 4' boards as well as silt fence and funnel traps set out yet only one has turned up for us so far. Phil

Great looking pines Phil! It seems like almost all the captive northerns I see are from NJ stock. You are the first person I've heard of that is working with KY animals.
I still think that WC Calloway County pine is one of the nicest northerns I've seen. (isn't the photo on the top of the pinesnake forum page your WC Kentucky pine?)
Chris

Thanks Chris. Yes the pine snake photo at the top of this forum page is the Calloway county pine we found two years ago. She is indeed an awesome beast! As you know this is a joint project with my partner Will Bird. We keep each other motivated to see it through and hopefully in time we will find additional specimens. In the meantime we are having a blast getting out into the field each week and searching for them. Phil

Wow Billy, I love that bull. Are you breeding that line?

Tim

BILLY Jul 08, 2005 10:55 PM

Hey Tim!!

I do not breed at this time. She is from John Cherry and his TX bulls were so killer looking that the choice of " which one " do I buy was a hard one! Email Cherry and see if he will have some this year.

Take care!

Great looking pits Phil, thanks for all the photos. This Sonoran is from the Christmas Mts., in southern Brewster County. A friend sent him my way and hopefully I will be breeding him next spring. The maroon colored patterning really caught my eye on him!

Have a good day,

Gregg F.

Beautiful snake! I think the sonorans are my favorite of the gopher snakes. Phil

gofer Jul 08, 2005 10:59 AM

Sonorans are my favorite pits too, but the Capes are close behind and the more i work with the lineaticollis the more I like them too. Great Basins are way up on my list also. Thanks for the great comment.

Have a good weekend,

Gregg F.

Wow Phil. That is a gorgeous pinesnake. No wonder you're obsessed - lol.

Phil Peak Jul 05, 2005 07:17 PM

Thanks Tim. They certainly have a different look to them than the Jersey pines I am raising up currently. I believe those are going to be more black and white snakes where as I believe the KY pines are developing a hint of yellow in the ground color. Variation with in a species has always intrigued me. Phil

gofer Jul 08, 2005 11:06 AM

Here are a few Great Basins from highway 18, 2 miles away from Apple Valley City in CA, near Victorville on the high desert.

Have a good one,

Gregg F.
