Sexing Common Snappers

coluberking25 Jul 04, 2005 03:47 PM

How are common snappers sexed? I was looking at some other posts and it sounds like they can be easily sexed by loking at them after a certain age. Can someone post pics of the visual ways to tell common snapper gender? (I'm gonna feel really stupid if size is how to sex them, because I knew that...LOL)

PS-I'm so happy I found that snapper again(read He's baaaaack.....)

Well thanks for the great, detailed information. HOW WILL I KNOW IT'S A MALE!?!?!?!?!!!!

There's no reason for the sarcasism. Golfdiva is right anyway. IF ITS A MALE... the cloaca will be further down on the tail, and if you hold him for a little bit, he will probably stick his parts out. There's your answer hope your happy.

Sorry, I just wasn't going to turn a snapping turtle upside down if I didn't know what to look for. I could have been looking for anything: she could have meant spurs, pores, enlarged scales, anything. Again my apologies for the sarcasm, I was just trying to be funny I guess.. By the way, I am happy now that I know what to look for. Any pics to help me out?

Any pics to help me out?

Here is a simple drawing I did to explain cloacal placement on other aquatic turtles. Its the same for snapping turtles, except they have much longer tails.

Hey thanks for the visual, very helpful. Now if only someone could have a photograph of the comparison OR the male turtle's "stuff" popping out just so I know what to be expecting(drawings are welcome as well, lol )
