injured box eastern turtle update

jack Jul 15, 2003 05:25 AM

About 3 weeks ago I found a female eastern box turtle that had just lost its rear left leg (presumably to some kind of animal attack ). It was still bleeding at the time I got it. I soaked it and applied neosporin on it daily to fight infection. The wound has healed very well and I have put her into an outside turtle pen, She is very active always looking around and I think that she will be OK. I am hoping that she had already laid her eggs for this year, by the time I found her. With one of her back legs missing I guess she will have a hard time digging a nest.
After not eating for the first 2 weeks she has now stared to eat. She is eating red grapes and large night crawler worms.

Here's a link to an article that might interest you...I have a very young (probably less than 5yr old) female who is an amputee, so I had lingering questions about her ability to dig nests in the future: I was very pleased to have stumbled across this article.
Hope you enjoy it.
