found rocks?

yelli Jul 04, 2005 05:32 PM

I've got a smooth rock that I want to put in with my kingsnake. I washed it out with hot water, and it still has some sort of algae remnants on it. Should I use a light bleach solution to totally clean this rock, or will it be safe to put it in with my snake 'as is?'

soak it overnight in a 5% bleach solution. use one cap of bleach per gallon of water. or bake it at 350 deg. for a couple hours. or soak then bake.

One capful of bleach added to one gallon water would not be a 5% solution.

Did you mean one capful of 5% bleach (most commercial bleach is a 5.5% solution)? That still seems a bit weak.

Typically 1/2 cup of 5% bleach per gallon is recommended. Half of that if your bleach is 11%.

I wouldnt bake a rock in the oven. Trapped moisture can cause it to crack...sometimes rather violently. Baking wood is a better plan, not rock...use bleach
