[frognet] Testing tank water, and when to change?

kyle1745 Jul 15, 2003 07:07 AM

I am wonder when or how to know when to change my water in my
Azureus tank. It looks very clear and I normally have to add water to it at least one time a week. I was just wondering if I should be testing this water or changing it. My substrate is gravel with moss on top. There are pictures of the tank on my site:

Any info would be great, what type of testing would or could I do? I guess I will need to find a way to get the water out if it needs
changed...

Testing for ammonia or nitrates would probably be the best clue to water conditions. You can use a length of flexible airhose such as used for aquarium bubblers to siphon the water out. A 20cc cannula syringe that you can get at any farm/veterinary supply (Cal Ranch, tack and saddle shops,) fits neatly into the airhose and can be used to start the siphoning. The leuer-lock syringes don't work as well because the tip is too short. I have an airtube siliconed in place from a hole in one corner that goes down past the substrate where the excess water accumulates, up the length of the corner and down the outside into a container. Your set-up is no doubt different, but this would adapt either temporarily or permanently.

This is what I did, I did not test it, but just changed it. Should not be a problem to change it 1 time a month. It only has about a gallon of water in it. Took me about 10mins to change it today. I used some extra tubing from my watefall and it worked fine.
