Drinking rhino vipers

arachdude7 Jul 05, 2005 10:40 AM

Okay you guys (and gals), I have a question for you. Is there any way To "train" a rhino viper to drink from a water dish? It gets a little uh..., nervewracking to have a highly venomous snake approach your hand within inches to drink from the mist from a spray bottle. Even when I move the little guy to the water dish for a soaking... it doesn't drink.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Mine drinks from a clean "New" garden sprayer. It's gives you a good safety margin.

Here's the Gabby having a drink.

I agree with Al and do the exact same thing but I have also found that the shallow plastic potted plant saucers work great as water dishes for Bitis. They are shallow enough to allow easy access into the water pan and if you use a substrate, can be easily sunk into the medium. I have never had to resort to soaking in order to keep my gabbies and rhinos hydrated; just a good heavy misting every 2 days and fresh water daily (along with the mister nozzle dropping some water on their mouths once a week)...our collection of Bitis have done very well under this regimen. We see our gaboons and rhinos drink out of these saucers regularly so I know that they have no problems getting in and out.
