Nice day herping in NJ

sullman Jul 05, 2005 12:53 PM

Coming home from the NJ shore yesterday I conned the wife to stop in the pine barrens. Only 10 mins in I spotted an Eastern Milk sunning itself on this sandy road.It was about 2 1/2 feet I guess. I started looking around and found a box turtle. Stayed for another hour or so and started heading back when I seen this flat board, flipped it over and found a HUGE Northern Pine .. I haven't seen one of those in the pine barrens for about 2 years so I was pretty excited. He was about 6 1/2 feet long and thick. Very healthy snake.

Then coming out I came across an Eastern King! Another Snake I haven't seen in awhile. I was very tempted to take him since I want one for my collection but left him where he was. He was about 5 foot and looked pretty banged up. Had a few scars from what looked like rodent bites. I was there for about 2 hours and spotted 2 snakes I havent seen in some time. It was a pretty good day.

Ahhhh man you are supposed to have a camera with you ! lol Sounds like a good impromptu Herp trip. Its a good thing you didnt snatch the King as its a big NO NO in NJ to collect any Wildlife.

Yeah I know. NJ laws are harsh but people still collect all kind of reptiles in NJ. I haven't seen a corn snake in over 6-7 years in NJ. There was a time where they were the most common snake. People still collect to add new genes into their captive bred collections. Like I said I haven't seen a pine snake in awhile and easterns are a rare sighting also.....pine barrens are so big you can collect 10-15 snakes a day and not get spotted by anyone....
