help ID' ing Iraqi snake

A friend of a friend is on duty in Iraq and snapped this photo of a snake basking in the water...

That's the local common name for Natrix tessellata tessellata.
It is apparently widely distributed thoughout the region, & is quite common wherever water is present.

You are more than welcome, Dean. I kinda figured you or the guy over there would get a kick out of that. I got that from the SSAR's book on reptiles & amphibians of the Middle East.

There are actually several snakes that look superficially like that including a Malpolon, but when I saw the genus Natrix..and the water in your photograph, the light flashed on.
