Question about laying eggs ???? - snake eggs that is.

mavh2 Jul 05, 2005 04:49 PM

What is the latest month that a snake can lay eggs?
Here we are in July and there are still posts of eggs
now being laid.

Is there a possibility that ball pythons can lay eggs all year around?

well i've seen posts in the past about babies hatching out as late as october so that means they snakes were still laying in aug. i say it's all in your female's reproductive cycle. not all of them will lay eggs around the same time of year. some even started to lay eggs as early as feb.

There is documentation that says that BP's have been known to lay eggs throughout the entire year. There are many factors that affect when eggs are laid but either way, they can drop at any time.

According to the video that I just picked up about a week before my first female laid eggs, in the wild they all pretty much lay eggs at the same time, and they all hatch about the same time. In captivity, we aren't able to simulate the African environment as well as their bodies would like. Since they get mixed environmental cues, they don't all have the same hormonal response. And as a result, you'll get eggs year around depending on a lot of things. The most crucial variable that the Sutherlands mentioned was ambient air temperature. The drop in air temperature stimulates the female more than anything else available,,, she says.

I have no reason to think otherwise, so I'll just trust her on that. By the way, the video was great, and I think it's the best money you'll ever spend.

is that animals can be as different from each other as humans are. Normally, my last egg is hatched by the end of July. This year my first clutch hatched around the end of June. My latest clutch (that I know of) will hatch around October 5. All my females are cycled exactly the same. So why the disparity? Again, I think BPs are influenced by more than just environmental cues.
