feeding hamsters *yummie!

HerpGirl Jul 15, 2003 07:56 AM

so, i just got my new knight bout 2 weeks ago and he (i think its a he)had never eaten any kind of pinkies prior to me getting him and he had been feeding well on large crix(although he is not completely an adult)i decided to get him a pinkie. well, when i got to the store they only had frozed pinkie mice but they had pinkie hamsters so i got one and believe it or not he actually ate it. kinda gross but he liked it so... anyway i also gave him a feeder fish(he opened his mouth to bite me so i dropped it, alive, in his mouth and he ate it. i used the same method to give him a young earthworm.) so, what i wanted to know is, how often can i give him pinkies(mice or hamsters, is there any nutritional difference?)

Three things I must say, not that you'll listen lol but here goes; try not to feed it any wild caught food, dont feed it feeder fish, and be consistent with what you feed it. Many herpers say vareity is good, I beg to differ. My anoles, pythons and nile monitors dont mind eating the same animal at every meal, i really think they could care less. However wild caught prey and feeder fish can be covered with external and internal parasites harmful to your lizard. They only reason i wouldn't feed it hamsters is availability and expense, hamster pinkies can be twice as much as mouse pinkies and are usually easier to obtain. Try and find when your pet store recieves its shipment of mouse pinkies, or order a bunch of them. I personally feed all my small lizards hissing cockroaches, they breed fast and are a decent sized meal. Good Luck!

actually the hamster was the same price. 99 cents, so not a big deal there. btw i refuse to feed my herps anything from outside. did i make it sound like i did? oh and the post i made to your thread earlier... i wasnt yelling if you interpret it as yelling, i went back and re read it and i think i may have typed it badly.

i understand. just out of curiousity, r you raising any a. equestris currently? im just wondering. and it seems we are the only ones on the forum now anyway.it also seems we got off on the wrong foot but i guess i can at least introduce myself, my name is sara although most people call me icy. i have a juvie iguana(green)2 adult carolinensis that i have had for years, and adult segrei, a ribbon snake, an eastern king(adult, about 11 years old, although technically my moms) mali uromastyx(for breeding), cuban knight anole(also for breeding), various salamanders, crays, and also fish. as you can see this is most of my current stock, not all i have raised though. i am not exactly "new" at the hobby lol. i am setting up a breeding program called "UroKnight" and may include some other herps but i am not sure yet.sigh. thats a lot about me and it doesnt seem to have to do anything with this post. but i thought it was needed to "loosen up" some tension.
if you dont mind me asking, what are the extents of your herp backround? im actually pretty interested... are you a breeder or did the anole nenates happen on mishap?

No worries. My name's Brad, my herps eh well the majority of them are anoles, 11 ball pythons and 5 nile monitors. I also have a few garter snakes, a Savanna monitor, a boa constictor burmese python and recently aquired a jacksons chameleon, a yellow anadconda and an american frilled lizard. Thats all i have as of today, looking to get a reticulated python and/or spotted caiman.
