sexing knights

HerpGirl Jul 15, 2003 08:41 AM

i am hoping to start breeding knights soon. right now i have one and i am hoping to get another on august 2 at the hamburg pennsylvania herp show. problem being, mine isnt sexed yet. and personally i have never been a good determiner of sexes in any of my herps. i was wondering if anyone could post a pic of the vent of a male and of a female. i have been calling him a he but i am not sure. he does have a VERY large head though.it seems like it is a quarter of the size of his body lol. i am prolly exagerating a little tho! i really would like some help, unfortunately i have not pics.
thanks

See the following link of the vents of an male and female Anolis (= Chameleolis; thought the species were barbatus).

HerpGirl,

Except during the breeding season, male knights are kinda difficult to distinguish from adult females. During the breeding season males have readily visible "hemipenil bulges" (sp?) or swelling at the base of the tail. In general, they do attain an overall larger size and have larger heads. However, I have seen literature that indicates females can reach the same size as males and both sexes have large dewlaps. One thing of interest that I recall reading in Dr. Zainal Haberham's (an ACG founding father) care sheet several years ago is that males will generally head-bob in a figure 8 pattern, as in up-down-side to side, whereas females typically are just up-down. I have noticed this in my trio. Hope this helps.

As the forum knows my passion is the knight anoles. So let me tell you how to tell the diffrence.

The male has a very large wide head that is very rough and bumpy and alot darker then the females also his tail just below the vent he will have his hemipenal bulges, if you press lighting with your fingers you can feel how "squishy" it is compared to the females firmer tail.

The female, has a habit of exteding her dewlap for exteded periods of time longer then a male will. She will have a smother head then the male. Also she will have white bands and in the older females the white bands will be either a really light white or a light blue... the bands go down the tail. On the back of theirs necks as they age are two oblong shapes that are differently colored in the pics you will notice the spots the 3 on the bottom and ontop of each other are females the one at the bottom is a very rough looking female the male is under then all at the top. Look closely at the females necks .. you can see the spots and notice the males.. eye ridges very large and pronouced until the females smoother head and face...if you wish to see closer pics of the male look up my name and theres plenty of "Mr.nall" Also on the females you can see the white bands still. If you wish to see pics of the bottoms of the "nalls" I will get some online for you> I hope this helps

Hi My name is justin and I have had My Knight for about 6 weeks.
If you say you can tell the sex by the darkness on the neck that
is really helpful. I have him in A 20 long, tipped upright and with
waterfall and sticks, plants, and rocks, it is not big but i am planning
to step it up. I was just wondering on average how much i should feed him
and what should i feed him. I know of pinkies and crix and mealworms but nothing else.
I live in illinois where they have bugs galore and it's just hard to
catch. He is always apple green and when i got him he was black. I think im doing alright for now
but i need some help. If you can help me make a damn good care sheet i
would be gratefully honored in keeping him as a family companion. He
means alot to me and i just dont want him to die. He's a wild caught
, from the petstore(had him Ordered). If you can help please help thanks.
