Feeding a cockroach to a gecko.....

Centurian Jul 06, 2005 01:50 AM

Hey all, I have an African Fat tailed gecko and was wondering if Madagascar Hissing cockroaches (of an appropriate size) would be a good or ok part of his diet. I would think the calcium would be good for him. Please let me know what you think of the idea.
Thanks in advance, Chad

I'm sure it would be an excellent addition to his diet. I think a variety in the diet can only help healthwise. We've got a breed of cockroach that lives in the woods here. Only gets about half and inch long tops. My fat-tails and skinks love em.

Thank you very much for the info, if you ever wanted to breed your own it is rediculously easy. My friend started with 9 as pets in a 10gal Aquarium (2 adult, 3 sub adult and 4 babys) about 2 years ago and his colony has now grown to 180!!!! he has offered a few to me to start my own and I was seeing if I would have a use for them for when they start to "take over".
Thanks again,
Chad

I would say to get some Dubias, Discoids or Orange Heads from blaberus.com from James Tuttle, he is the best around with them and also the most knowledgeable!

I highly recommend lobster roaches too -- they're nutritious and put some nice weight on reptiles.
