Sulcatta abandonment

joeysgreen Jul 06, 2005 05:16 AM

I predicted this 3 years ago when I first say this species in petstores. Our local herp adoption has seen an influx on sulcatta's needing homes because of a)large size b)lifespan c)daily maintenence.
I'm sure this problem is not unique to Edmonton and down south in the states there must be much more of a problem.
As most in this forum know, these animals need much more room than a herp society can provide, and with 10 months of the year being too cold for them outside the problem is just dynamite!

Here's a pic of a much more hospitable pet

Here in Belgium, sulcata's are finding their way to the petstores as well. The price is about 100 euro, this is cheap for a tortoise in Belgium. I got lucky. About three years ago I didn't have enough money to buy one. If I had the money with me, there would be a bulldozer in the garden at the moment. I went home, took my keyboard, went to google and found out about how big those small guys can get. I knew enough. That's when "Tortoise fever" got me. Now I have four baby hermanns (two years old)

(Sorry for my English. Normally I speak Dutch.)

Here's a picture.

Oh, lordy! I wish I would have known how big these babies get before I got one!
