What is a good beginner snake?

stage9 Jul 06, 2005 10:49 AM

I am looking to find out what kind of snake is good for beginners? Looking for a type of snake that is tame for handling, doesn't require extreme amounts of care, and is an all around nice snake. I have done some research on Pueblan Milksnakes and am also wondering is these are a good snake for beginners. Any feedback will help.
-Thanks

You might try searching down this forum a little. This question gets asked here several times a month so there will be a variety of answers below.

I don't recommend Pueblans as a beginner snake. They are very high strung, particularly as babies. They are not a good handling snake.

Jeez Louise!! Yes, this question is posted almost weekly.
Perhaps the powers that be should develop a sub-forum under a header entitled "good beginner snakes"
Have to say Chris, you are to be commended for the time and effort you invested in developing the chart you have posted and I greatly appreciate your willingness to share it...

Best regards,

Jeff

you can not go wrong with the corns. they are very docile with handling. come in LOTS of colors and do well in 20 gallon long tanks as adults, unless they get over the 5 foot range which i hear is common.
i considered a pueblan when i first started to get into snakes and they are SO high strung. i handled a baby and i though it would pass out.
you might be happier with a corn. what ever you get do alot of reading about it. also if you can go to a reptile show you can look and hold alot of different snakes and you may find something you like better.
