Question: Does anyone have an adult scalaris that retains its juvenile pattern?

devboy Jul 06, 2005 11:03 AM

Like it says on the tin really. I have a 11-14yr old female ladder snake that partially retains her juvenile patterning, I've heard of another keeper in Britain that also has a female adult with similar patterning and remember reading on a German site about two ladders that kept their juvenile markings. These are the only ones I've ever heard about. All females, any comments, observations or theories as to whether it might be a female only trait (or not) are welcome. Particularly interested if anyone knows of a similar male or female adult ladder.
Please excuse the professionally taken photo of snake against hairy dog blanket!

Here's what a 'normal' female ladder looks like of equal age (11-14yrs). This time taken against an unhairy (fresh from the wash!) blanket.

Both my girls are blushing now, they are very modest, bless them. Thanks for the compliments.
Do you think I might get some more feedback if I were to post on the Asian & European Rat Snake sub forum guys and gals?

Great looking scalaris, I too have looked for adults that retained juvenile patterning but haven't found any yet. Thanks for posting the great pictures.

Have a good day,

Gregg F.

Thanks, my ladders are getting used to these compliments. Have you ever seen any 'red' ones, I have only heard of them, never yet seen one. One day maybe. I like the pictures of your babies on the other thread, they are always so cute. Its a shame that generally their clutch size isn't greater. I once had 22 infertile eggs from that 'normal' looking girl! Usually mine drop no more than 7, never had more than 6 actually hatch though.

I have never seen any red ones either, but that would be a great looking scalaris i'm sure. Good luck with yours and hopefully the clutches become more fertile and you have a better ratio.

Have a good one,

Gregg
