Was wondering what everyone was using for water dishes in the hatchling/shoebox racks. Seems everything I find they manage to tip over on me and it steams up the box, makes it damp, etc. Which is a pain in the rump.

Any thoughts/pictures would be appreciated

Dog bowls / puppy bowls that are wider on the bottom then on the top and are weighted.

Depending on your substrate, you'll often find babies under the dishes too.

We are in love with the water dishes from Superior Enterprises (Reptilepackaging.com). They are PERFECT for hatchling balls, and we use them on almost every other colubrid we keep! Check them out. The downside is that you have to buy a ton. IF you don't need this many, shoot me an email, I may be able to help you out!

I keep it simple with a 16 once deli cup for water, and an 8 ounce for a hide.

here are some quick pics I just took low quality I'm late for work, but you get the idea.

just to show you they like the hides

they don't tip them over.

BTW, that is a 6 Qt shoebox, and about a 3 month old hatchling at approx. 170 grams.

For the water bowls, they have have Velcro at wal-mart in the arts and craft section. Just stick some on the bottom of the water bowl and some on the cage floor. It works great.

After years of dumped plastic bowls and cleaning soaked substrate we switched everything over to ceramic crocks.

We use 4" for babies, 5" for small adults and 7" for the big girls.

If your time is valuable go with the plastic deli cups from Superior. The 8 or 12oz are OK for shoeboxes, you can also get lids with golfball size holes in the top to prevent spilling. The wide bottom prevents the cup from tipping over. If time is no problem go with the ceramic crocks, but then they need frequent cleaning. I use ceramic crocks with deli cups inside so I can just discard the deli cup and replace it with a new one. Hope this helps, Ron

ceramic dishes are a great suggestion. I have had difficulty finding one that will hold the deli cups that I have and also not cost $10 per unit.

NEVER EVER THOUGHT OF USING THEM......

I use the plastic containers that electrical tape comes in....yes they spill........but they were free......hundreds of them.........when they run out maybe I'll try some bird waterers........

how often do the babies actually crawl into them and all the water comes out?.........
