Varanus indicus...mangrove monitor

guamturtle Jul 15, 2003 09:48 AM

Does anyone here have any experience with these monitors? I am thinking about getting from a local breeder. I was just wondering do they make good pets? I am planning on building a semi large enclosure in my backyard. I don't think I have ever heard of any one keeping these monitors before....I hope someone here has had experience with them. Thanks...

Good pets?? as in cuddly walk on a leash type? Or sit and look at them type?

If you ask me they are not going to sit on your lap and be the cuddly type. You can interact with them and they are very fun to watch. I have worked with mine for about 4 years now. If you do build an outside cage make sure it has the kind of door you walk into first before opening there cage door. Otherwise you may find them waiting to dash out as you open the door. They are very fast and have some killer nails.

As for your local breeder having them do you mean he bred and produced them? That is done few and far between. So more then likely he imported them.

If you decide to get them good luck they are lots of fun.

Ya I mean the kind of pet to watch.

I'm sure he bred them here. I'm from Guam and these monitor lizards live in the jungles here. I saw he had a bunch of hatchlings (they were actually bigger than hatchlings) and a few adults. But the adults weren't for sale. One of them he could actually hand feed. He said that he caught the adults a long time ago. He said that the hatchlings were from the eggs of 2 of his females.

Oh that would explain it I was thinking of the states sorry. They are very rarely bred here and a hard find for captive babies. They are very cool monitors I enjoy working with mine.
I handle them without much trouble they are just not much for sitting still but will walk all over me and jump down etc.
