Glass.. temper'd or not? Thickness? ....

striderjg Jul 06, 2005 04:06 PM

Hello all again,
Since I got most of my cage constructed and moving onto finishing it, I guess now is the time to start figuring out the doors. I'm gonna go with 2 framed glass doors that swing open. The diminsions of each door will be under 4'x4'. I'm trying to decide if I need to pay the extra money for temper'd glass, or if plain old sheet glass is fine. Secondly, any recommendations on thickness I should be looking at. This cage will be holding a black roughneck moniter fyi.
TIA

Tempering essentially takes the strength of glass away from the edges and moves it to the face. Since you're framing the door the weak edges are not a concern so I think I would pay the extra for the tempered product. I say that, of course, having received a mild tail slap from a Black Roughneck Monitor in the past. I suspect they could shatter 1/4" plate glass.

Awesome species, by the way. One of my favorites.

Got it, so temper'd is the way to go... or are you saying should reconsider glass at all? They are great monitors. I hope to have success with attempting to breed them when they come of age.

Use 1/4" tempered glass in a frame. Acrylic or polycarbonate is too easily scratched.

Got it. Thanks. Ya, that's the reason I eliminated thinking about plexi too. The scratch factor.
