Choosing a Silicone- pls HELP

wanta68gt May 17, 2003 12:43 PM

okay, I went to the Lowes and they didn't have a silicone that was specifically "aquarium safe", so I bought this one, HERE. It doesn't say anything about being non-aquarium safe, and I just figured that if you can use it in a bathroom, then you should be able to use it around frogs (I know, I know - frogs absorb through their skin, and they are much more sensitive than we are) - so that is why I am asking your all's advice. Should I keep trying to find an aquarium safe silicone, or do you think this is a safe alternative? thanks in advance

I thought I have always read that you don't want to put silicon in your aquarium that contains chemicals that are mildew resistant. I'm sure others who have had more experience than I have can give advice. I'm putting together a viv that is using some DAP aquarium silicon picked up from my local "Do It" center.

Unfortunately I don't think you can't use that silicone because of the "mildew resistance". Generally I've been told you can use any silicone that doesn't have the "mildew resistance" with no ill effects. I have seen the aquarium silicone in numerous Wal-Marts in their aquarium section, you could always check there. If that doesn't work there's a ton of sites online that offer aquarium save sealants. Hope this helps.

well i too have heard mildew resistant is a no no. i used normal 100% silicon caulking in my FBT tank and the silicon is exposed to the water where my frogs normaly lay and over the past 2 or 3 months no ill effects. just get normal 100% silicon. also from what iv heard the aquarium grade is the same stuff and is more expensive.

Hi,
I think what they mean about it being aqurium safe is that it will hold up to water pressure on the sides of the tank. What are you doing attaching a background? The silicon I use is called DAP 100%silicone rubber sealent. On the tube it says it's "food safe".I learned to use it from prior messages here and on Frognet.I have had a pair of imitators in a tank that I used it in for about 4 months without any birth defects in the tads, froglets or adults.
Good Luck,
Mark W.
