breeding info..

dragonlvr Jul 15, 2003 10:12 AM

my beardie ozzy(im not sure if he's a he or she yet) but i was thinking about breeding oz when he/she is old enough, if ozzy is a female im most likely breed her with a male at my local reptile store(they have some BIG BEAUTIFUL males) and if azzy is a male i might buy a female....but i bred my chameleon and she got really skinny aftewords , i guess from all the stress of laying 29 eegs(she is still kinda small but she WAS fat and old enough and they said she was ok to breed)...then around 5 days after she laid those 29 eegs she started to lay more last night..and shes SO skinny! i dont see how she has any eggs in her! but the question is do female beardies get really skinny and dehydrated like chameleons do? if beardies do , im not going to breed because i cant handle seeing one of my babies so skinny!! thanks for reading

First of all, each dragon should be quarantined for 90 days to make sure it's healthy & parasite-free. My 19 mth old female has laid 2 clutches so far this yr & yes, she got skinny after laying. Good nutrition & hydration is essential at all times, but especially before breeding & after laying. After laying, Miss [bleep]y has been provided with increased feedings & supplementation, as well as baths/mistings. So far, she's plumped right back up after laying her clutches. Hope this helps!

Yep, in water just up to their shoulders, and NEVER leave them alone! During these warm mths here in Indiana, I take mine out & put them in a kiddie pool (Walmart $4-$6.) In the winter, I put them in my tub (I always disinfect it before human use!) I always put some kind of mat or towel in the bottom so they feel a little more secure. With little ones, or any that seem to be afraid, I let them grasp onto my finger & then I slowly give them a ride back & forth across the water. I leave them in for at least 15-20 minutes, unless outside in the sun, then I leave them in for at least 30 minutes. I also put a rock in the pool so they can bask.

LOL! I see they bleeped my dragon's name in my previous post! Oops, I didn't think about that!
