Beardie hasen't eaten or pooped

zooloo May 17, 2003 12:47 PM

I reciently aquired a new beardie about 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure how old he is, but definatly an adult. he seems to be otherwise healthy. When I first introduced him to his new enviorment he was eating crickets and superworms regularly for the first few days. He also deficated once the first day I had him, but has not gone since. I have not seen him eat a whole lot lately either. He leaves his bowl of collard, mustard greens full, and hasen't touched it. I shake and bake the greens with miner-all I. Could it be he doesn't like his greens sprinkled? I also have started to give him daily warm soakes, but have seen no results, It's only been 2 days tho. I have a reptile bark substrate, 75w exo-terra basking bulb, about 14" away from bottom, and a 15w repti-glo uv light, He's in a 30 gal long tank measuring 3'+1'+17"tall. I know this may be a little small but all i have for now. The Dragon measures about 13" long including tail. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Hi
bark is very bad for a beardie.
they have a sticky toungh and when they go for a crick they can eat bark by acident.
it can lead to impactions.
also a low baskingspot lower then 110-105 can lead to impaction.
bathing shoulder deep feel with youre wrist idf its not to hot.
then after a while most of time they wil poop 15-20 min
ad warm water if its cools of to much and stay with him all they time.

Try feeding him pureed carrots. They seem to like the taste and the water content of carrots should make it easier for him to poo. I agree though, get rid of the bark and put paper towel or plain newsprint on the bottom for now. Try giving him greens without the Minerial suppliment on it. Should only dust crickets once every other day for sub adults (from his length, doesn't sound like he is a full grown adult, unless he wasn't feed enough protein by his previous owner).

I also heard sand substrate can lead to impaction. What would be the best for my beardie?

Since you didn't raise it, I would take a fecal sample in to the vet as soon as you can get one. Make sure parasites aren't causing the appetite problem. In the interrum, you might want to check out www.parazap.com.

Yeahh, he pooped!! I raised his basking area to 108 gave him pureed carrots, got rid of the bark and added some soft astroturf, the kind that doesn't unravel as easy so he doesn't get his toes caught up in it, and he seems much HAPPIER!! all around, Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm kinda new to bearded dragon keeping so all the info is helpful. I would like to get som pics on this forum, but it keeps sayin' my files are too big, is there anyway to shrink them or any other tricks I can do to get them on here?? Thanks again, -J
