waterfall pump question

iceyesnteeth Jul 06, 2005 09:15 PM

this is my first homemade vivarium and im about to tackle the waterfall.i have not seen many vivariums but the ones i have seen, the waterfall was not very strong.it kinda trickled down.does anyone have a waterfall that looks more like a waterfall and falls with more force and more water? im not looking for niagra falls but i do want a bit more than a trickle.what type of pump should i purchase that pumps enough water to create a nice looking water feature?i have noticed in the store many pumps offer adjustabe output but it seems by the numbers, that the variation in output is small.anyway, like i said i have not seen many so i dont really know.oh by the way my tank is quite large.3 1/2ftx2 3/4 feet x like 3 ft tall,so i dont think a lager waterfall would disturb much.hey about how many gallons is that anyway?i made it myself.thanks you uys rock!

I've tried several kinds of pumps and like the submersible RIO 600 the best so far. It will pump over 4 feet high with a 5/8" tube, and there is a nice strong flow over two separate waterfalls in my paludarium. It's fairly easy to clean and the impeller is replaceable. I also have a Maxi-Jet 600 in a couple of tanks. These took a little jimmy-rigging to get them to fit in the false bottom, but they also have good out-put and have lasted well so far. Both have adjustable flow. Anything smaller that I've tried has always pooped out in relatively short order.

thanks for the reply, but is a filter/pump ever reccomended? i was thinking about buying an out of tank filter and just having one hose go in to suck and another hose to power the waterfall.i just dont know if these would be powerfull enough to make a decent waterfall.like i mentioned im looking for a powerfull waterfall.i dont hear about people using filters in their vivariums as often as i hear about plain water pumps being used.is there a reason for this?
