Dorm fridge as incubator heating question.

gmherps Jul 06, 2005 09:47 PM

I'm done converting a dorm fridge into an incubator. All I need to do is decide on a heating element. Should I go with heat cord, or just run 1 piece of 11" flexwatt down the back (inside of course) for the heat? I will also be using Helix DBS 1000 or a Ranco to control the temps. Any help and or pics on peoples set ups will help greatly.

Thanks a lot,

Greg,
Hope all is going well for you and your snakes. As for the heating element, personally I prefer to use 11-inch heat tape. I made an incubator out of a cooler and used 11-inch heat tape and it maintained a perfect temperature within .5-1 degree. But of course I had an extra piece of it lying around which was the main reason I used it. lol

But I've always been a big fan and user of heat tape and that's what I would use. Be sure to post some pics of the incubator when you're finished. I'll try to get some pics of the cooler style incubator for you.

Take care,

I would go with the flexwatt as well. Heat cabel will not have a large enough heating area to provide for the stability your looking for in the bator...

Thanks Mike, flexwatt is what I'm leaning towards too.

I'll post pics once it's functional.

A couple of 25 watt (or smaller) bulbs?

gmherps Jul 08, 2005 07:59 AM

I was thinking more like running a 2 foot piece of 11" flexwatt down the back with a small computer fan monuted on the bottom for circulation.

I've done this and it works great with the 11" flex. Be careful to use a 120V computer fan if you use one, most are 12V and will burn out as soon as they kick on (been there done that lol). I've actually run them with and without fans and both ways work fine.

I was just about to say this. You want a vent fan, not a computer case fan, which is 12v dc. You would need a transformer. You can pick up a 120v ac vent fan at radio shack or the like.

Good point.

That's what I was meaning, but it just didn't come out right.
