P&J Turtle Farm .VS Turtleman / John Richards .. PINK Skin Alligator Snappers

yaakyar Jul 06, 2005 10:05 PM

Anyone bought from both of these turtle farms?
Are P&J's "Pink Skin Alligator Snappers," Legitimate Leucistics?
Anyone bought one of these from P&J? TurtleMan-John Richards?
Anone bought a Pinky/Leucistic from both? Was there a difference after you got them? Health and hearty-ness of eaters? Growth? Is there true or distinct difference between a "Pink Skin," and a Leucistic?
Any Pinky or Leucistic owners please advise.

Thanks~

CJ

P.S. Thanks to the folks who replied to my Albino Alligator Snapper Want-Ad. Still looking all info greatly appreciated.
Keep it coming, I'll compile and share my findings.

I have never bought turtles from P&J or John Richards but I know John and have great respect for him. My pinks and leucistics have been very healthy and have grown just as fast as my normal colored alligator snappers. As far as the pinks or leucistic staying the same color I don't think that it matters where you get the turtles from. Like I have said on this forum before some of my pinks stayed pink while some of them turned cream colored or yellow. The shells even changed colors from dark to golden on some. The question is what color will they be in years to come? More pictures in photo gallery.

Thank You.
So pinks and Leucistics are the same then?

I've been digging up old threads on the topic here at kingsnake and on other sites, but still have yet to find a conclusion.

So is a 40.00 Pink Skinned Alligator Snapper from P&J Turtle Farm the SAME as a $175.00 Leucistic Alligator Snapper from John Richards @ Turtleman.com?

The answer in greenbacks is obvious, but short of buying both to see what I get would really be more unfair to the Snappers than my wallet since I'm really wanting an Albino, but am researching the next best thing if I can't find one.

I know that someone found them in Japan, but nothing concrete was ever posted as to what site, if there were imported OK, or where they originated from~ a couple guys were talking about them a few years back... sk8r009(Greg) & Gamera.
I sent them messages with hopes they're still around.

Anyone else lurking wanna chime in? sk8r009, Gamera, Steveh, Dewback? Anyone??

Thanks!

CJ

Well, I was thinking about getting a pink from P&J this year too since I have one from John Richards. It seems that the pinks pretty variable in color as they get older. I think the leucistics and pinks are the same thing, although I won't be sure until I have both.

As for the albinos I have heard of one or two in Japan. If you go to the GoGo Snapper website there are some really unusual looking snappers on display. I am not sure if these are albinos or leucistics/pinks. If you can find one expect to pay a lot. I have seen albino common snappers sell for tens of thousands here in the States and they are much more common than albino alligator snappers.

Awesome! Guess I'll sell a kidney or something...
I appreciate any and all leads... even if the road leads me to a wall. Every iron is one in the fire. I'll find one, I know they're out there!

Thanks Man!

Hi,I have a few from p&j and one from john last year. The one from john was pretty much the same.I did notice the one from john tip of tail is pointed up just did this about 3 months ago,I felt it and its pretty stiff kink, been there for awhile and looks fine.Kind looks like his second worm stick up from sand when hes hiding in sand. One of the turtles from P&j was super pink,no black on his skin at all.The other 2 from p&j have a little more black than the one from johns. Also the one that is super pink is growing the fastest and is the meanest.Well Hope this helps.Laters Brian

Thanks Again!

SteveH Jul 07, 2005 09:39 PM

Hello CJ, i haven't heard of anyone ever having an albino alli-snapper. as far as pinkskins go i've had 2 from p&j. the 1st turned from deep pink to a cream color in a year and a half. i gave him to a high school teacher last year. i got a hatchling last november and his shell is already 4 1/2-5". i'm keeping him in the garage where the water temp. is in the high 80's. p&j's pinkskins and john richards leucistics are probably the same. but who knows. turtlesox pic in the gallery of a normal snapper with a golden shell is a suprize. it looks like it is being kept against a white background.p&j will have pinkskins for sale in september. turtleman probably has them for sale now.

turtlesox Jul 07, 2005 11:16 PM

SteveH You are right all of my turtles have been in white plastic tanks.I also kept them in a heated building all winter. The normals with the golden shells were a suprize to me too. When they were young all of the shells were dark, even on my pinks. Now I have about 20 or so pinks and normals with golden shells. Some of my other pinks just have light shells not golden. Then I have pinks with dark shells and also normals with grayish colored shells. My leucistic are also mixed up with different colored shells. I don't think that the color of the tank has anything to do with the colors of the turtles, who knows but we all keep trying to figure it out.

yaakyar Jul 08, 2005 01:33 AM

Thanks for sharing all your info guys.

Steveh, I think the garage is where all my stuff is going next also. I'm pretty confident based on what the OK Fish and Game told me about the Ally's got bigger as a result of the higher water temps.

I haven't found a true albino yet either.
Someone emailed me a (name held for courtesy) referral for a guy in FL, that has an Albino project going and hopes to have offspring next year, but they are for common snappers.
I spoke to the breeder on the phone this morning on my way home from work and he said that Albino Alligator Snappers just haven't happened yet. He's been in the herp world since at least the early 70's

Dewback sent posted about GO GO Snappers, after googling and translating digging around through links off this site I found pics of some of the weird ally's he was talking about.
1) google "go go snapper"
2) click translate on the first page then start 'digging around' you should come across a page somewhere there that has a bunch of different pics of snappers... I'll post the exact link when I get home in the morning...

There are a couple that are close to Albino on those pages, except they have dark eyes. So, since I know that it's just going to take some time to track one down as close to albino as possible, I think that I will try for a really light leucistic from John Richards to start with, then in August, September when P&J have some hatchlings, I will order one of their Pinkest Pinks from them for 40.00 and see what I get.

I currently have a hatchling (A.S.) that has lighter colored skin (chocolate milk ), but has a golden shell. I'll take a few pics this weekend, and try dig up tips for posting pics from one of the old threads... I'll also take some other pics of my current set up, and the other snappers in my tank.

This weekend I am adding another 60 gallon feeder tank set-up to my room for the Leucistic. Then next weekend my friend who designs filters and hot rodded filter conversion kits for salt water tank enthusiasts is going to come over. We're going to custom design and build a couple of filters for specific my tanks. I'm also going to start talking to him about the inevetiable stock tank filtration. I'm thinking 300 gallon, or two 125's... one indoor ( garage where it's warm ) and one outside.

Ooops time to get back to work...

Thanks Again~

CJ

Here's the link as promised to a few of the lighter Alligator Snappers that I found on the go go snapper website...

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://jokermore.hp.infoseek.co.jp/&prev=/search?q=go go snapper&hl=en&lr=

if the link doesn't work click the bottom link off the main
http://jokermore.hp.infoseek.co.jp
page... it's the last link on the left column.
"of everyone love turtle,"

:D

P.S.
Also, before I shell out $$$ to a turtle farm, does anyone here have a healthy leucistic for sale??

Thanks, Enjoy!

CJ

turtlesox Jul 08, 2005 11:32 AM

Yes What age or size are you looking for.

yaakyar Jul 08, 2005 05:27 PM

Hey turtlesox,
Great!!
I was looking to get a yearling. Size about 3", and up to 4".
Established, hearty, and as light colored and reticulated as possible. A visual reference would be the lil' guy on Turtleman.com with two pictures that Richards is holding (prize leucistic) would be ideal.
Please email me: yaakyar@sbcglobal.net if you have anything in that range.

Thank You!!

CJ
