Did you find those two in the same location? I live in Santa Barbara Co, CA and around here the garters are pretty uniform. When I went up to Arcata last year, I noticed a lot more variability in terms of color.

I found these two on the same four acres of land. The snakes that I find have many different dorsel stripe colors, yellow is probably the most common, but I find them in orange, red, and blue. It's amazing the variety of one species on a small plot of land.
