Questions about Rhinos

LordOfTheLizards Jul 06, 2005 11:58 PM

1. What is the maximum size they can get, without the tale (as in not counting the tail)

2. What's a good size enclosure? I have a room in my basement which is 8'x6', would that be large enough for a full grown male?

3. How often should you feed fruit?

4. Say I get a four month old one, how large of an tank would it need? At what age can I put a full grown one in it's main room?

5. How personable/tamable are Rhino Iguanas?

6. Which sex tends to have larger/more prominent horns? At what age can sex be deturmined?

7. Do Rhinos like to climb?

Thanks

According to the West Indian Iguana Specialist Group status survey book the average adult male has a SVL of 20.5"
2. What's a good size enclosure? I have a room in my basement which is 8'x6', would that be large enough for a full grown male? Yes, but if there are no windows, you may end up with a very depressed animal.

3. How often should you feed fruit? maybe every other feeding, or at the most 10% of a feeding.

4. Say I get a four month old one, how large of an tank would it need? At what age can I put a full grown one in it's main room?
A 2x2x6 will keep him happy until he is about 3' long, then break him into free roaming.

5. How personable/tamable are Rhino Iguanas? There are always stories about the one that went haywire. I have a couple that were handled alot as hatchlings, and were tamer then than now, and others that were not handled that much as juvies, but became tame once they matured to adulthood. Males tend to be tamer than females. If the adults are tame, the odds of a tame off spring are much better than if the adults are nervous or wild. disposition can be both inhierited and environment.

6. Which sex tends to have larger/more prominent horns? At what age can sex be deturmined? Males have bigger heads, and tend to have larger horns, but not always. Sex determined by hemipene bulge around 2 years.

7. Do Rhinos like to climb? They will, but nowhere as much as a green. overall they like to hang out on the ground.
