Cal Coastal vs. Cal Desert Kings

bluethunder Jul 07, 2005 12:37 AM

Last week I had the good fortune of finding a subadult cal king trying to cross a busy road near Corona in Riverside County. It was almost ran over twice. Good thing I happened to have my fishing license on me. I was comparing this juvenile to a coastal cal king owned by a friend of mine. The bands are whiter than the coastal, but have some yellow in them. They are also wider and flare out toward the ventral side. The coastal king's bands are more tan in color and do not flare out. The dark bands are darker than the coastal...but are not black. Is this just a varitaion of a coastal, or a variation of a desert king...or maybe a cross? The juvenile was in a scrub brush and grassy area. Any body out there have any information?

Thanks
Tony

The Corona king is a coastal king as well... The desert forms are found in true desert... Corona is an inland area but still has much coastal influence....

Hope that helps
